On the 3rd July, we arrived at Castle Green, Broughty Ferry, prepared to wow the crowds with cars raced at the club. It was Gala Week and our PR officer had managed to grab a display spot. Nobody knew what to expect so the day was going to be an experience. The stall spot was perfect with a view to the Radio Tay stage, a BBQ beside us and funfair rides behind us. People would have to walk by us to get anywhere so it was a good start to the day.
Once the stall got set up, it looked really well. A nice big party tent, owned by the Low family, supplied plenty of room to space out the display. It also allowed protection from the sun that came out. With bunting, banner, sweets and flyers all in place, we were ready to meet and greet the crowds. Soon the Radio Tay stage came alive, bringing in the crowds and quickly we realised that this was going to be a success. Music was pumping and we were all is good spirits. Paul Bignell managed to spy the Radio Tay photographer and convinced him over to take a few group photos. Due to the location, live music and BBQ, we were soon enticing people into the tent. Initially, people were just looking and wanting to buy cars but with a few encouraging words by the members, we had them asking questions about where and when we race. The children were drawn to Paul Bignell's "Mr & Mrs Reindeer", wondering how they attached to a car! Paul Rutherford's buggy was getting quite a bit of attention too. So much so that it may be banned from the next PR event.
Within two hours of the event starting, all flyers were gone. We resorted to handing out 'Race Chatter' and 'BRCA - about the sport' magazines with a post-it note containing the club's web address. By mid-afternoon, we had swarms of people coming in. It was a buzz to see so many people wanting to know more. A long queue formed in front of us, waiting for the BBQ, which kept us hidden for a while but also served as a means to entice people to come have a chat while they waited. We were all kept talking and kept busy showing off the cars. At one point, an organiser of the Gala came along to see how we were getting along. We told her how impressed we were at the turnout and she had even said that we should get a track sorted for next year to do a demonstration! I'm sure Mr. Bignell will make sure she doesn't forget that one. There was another lady who wouldn't forget Paul in a hurry. She was trying to get her grandson's attention by waving but found Paul waving back instead. He enjoyed a lovely conversation with her even though he had no idea who she was. Paul continued to entertain us throughout the day and laughter flowed from our stall in abundance.
Sabrina was the real star of the show, she had a great rapport with the public and showed a great deal of knowledge and enthusiasm throughout the day.
Letting potential members know that we are a klub that is a place to come and have a nights fun racing with a good bunch of people...Well Done to all the rest of the members as well who did a brilliant job for the klub
By the end of the day we were low on magazines and had no flyers left. The day was a success. The sun kept shining, the atmosphere was brilliant and the attention from the crowd to the stall was surprising. What shocked us all was the number of local residents who didn't know we existed, but that will all change soon
Now we can look forward to the 19th August when the club starts the winter season and hopefully see some of the many nice people we spoke to. A few suggestions to improve the next PR event has been noted so watch out for the next time as it will be bigger and better!
